A beautifully made square coffee table from the 1960s–1970s, constructed entirely in solid wood and defined by its unusual end-grain tabletop.
The top is assembled from numerous individual wooden blocks, exposing the end grain and creating a rich geometric pattern across the surface. The construction continues around the edges, where the separate elements form a rhythmic border. Four slender turned legs give the substantial wooden top a lighter and more refined appearance.
The designer and country of origin remain unknown. The craftsmanship and use of solid wood show influences that could be associated with both Scandinavian and Italian furniture design of the period. Similar experimentation with end-grain construction can be found in Scandinavian furniture of the 1960s, but without a label or documented provenance we prefer not to make a specific attribution.
