Set of Four Mid-Century Woven Rush Dining Chairs, circa 1950s

€800.00

Beautiful set of four vintage dining chairs dating from around the 1950s, combining a warm-toned wooden frame with handwoven rush seats and backrests.

The chairs are particularly well constructed, with rounded legs and uprights, exposed wooden joinery and carefully woven panels. The woven backrest is attached between small wooden blocks, giving the chairs an interesting handcrafted and architectural detail. The gently curved seats provide a comfortable seating position while keeping the overall design light and understated.

The exact designer and country of origin remain unknown. Stylistically, the chairs show both French and Scandinavian influences. The extensive use of woven rush, straightforward wooden construction and visible craftsmanship are strongly associated with French post-war furniture, although the restrained proportions and clean construction also recall Scandinavian furniture of the same period. Comparable French chairs from the 1950s frequently combine wooden frames with woven rush seats and backs. We therefore prefer to leave the attribution open rather than assign them to a specific designer or country without documentation.

The chairs remain in good original vintage condition. The wooden frames show an attractive patina with small marks, scratches and variations in tone consistent with age and use. The original woven seats and backrests show visible signs of age and wear, contributing to their authentic character.

Sold as a set of four.
